Wat's Dyke Way Heritage Trail

Path problems:

  • The section crossing the A483 road and past Weston Farm (pages 36 & 37 in the guidebook) needs to be read and interpreted carefully.
  • Sodylt Old Hall (pages 51 & 52 in the guidebook). Shell Brook A new bridge has been erected at SJ 350 411. This is accessible by turning left at Sodyllt Hall SJ 344 405 and walking down lane to Dee Side SJ 346 413. It should be noted that the section between SJ 348 414 and SJ 350 411 (the footbridge) is currently extremely muddy. The route after Shell Brooke is a magnificent riverside walk.
  • On Page 85 The last sentence in Section 3 should read "Cross the road and turn left along the verge past Station Road and Padeswood Golf Course on left."

Now for some good news:

Wat's Dyke Way has been featured in The Complete Guide To: Outdoor Britain by The Indendent Newspaper 11 July 2009

The Wat's Dyke Heritage Trail was the first attraction listed in a feature entitled '50 reasons to holiday in the UK' in the Observer of Sunday 1 February '09. The report also included a link to the Wats' Dyke website.

February 2009: Wrexham County Borough Council’s Environment Department has laid a new boardwalk on a wet area of a public footpath between Pandy and New Road, Rhosrobin that is part of the Wat’s Dyke Heritage Trail. The 40m long boardwalk is constructed out of recycled plastic and has a slip-resistant surface. The council has also installed three kissing gates along this section of the trail as well.

Other attractions along the trail

Interested in arts and crafts? If so, you will find two workshops side by side at Woodside, Glyn Morlais, St Martins.

In one, you will find a range of ceramics produced by well known author, Jaque Atkin and in the other, a range of paintings, photographs and sculptures by Malcolm Ozanne, and at both you will have the chance to speak with their creators.

They’re not commercial studios - they are where the artists live. Just knock on the door and if they’re in, they’ll welcome you. If you want to make a more formal arrangement, then telephone Malcolm Ozanne on 01691 772714 or e-mail him at: macozanne@5dfineart.com

At the end of your walk...........

If you are thinking of doing the Ruabon circular walk contained in the Wat's Dyke Heritage Trail guidebook, you may be interested to know that a real ale pub which brews its own ale has opened close to the start/finish of this walk and is well worth a visit after you've done the walk. It's called the Bridge End Inn and is on the main road about 200 yards from the railway station and about 30 yards from a building known locally as the Roundhouse.

If you're thinking of making a special visit because you're tempted by the idea of some real ale at the end of the walk, we suggest you phone the pub to enquire about their opening hours. They can be contacted on 01978 822949.
